IAAF World Youth Championships 2007 OSTRAVA
DAY 5 (July 15)
400 m Hurdles M., Final: Gold - William WYNNE, USA: I did not expect such a great time. I like this kind of weather. I am used to train in heats as i come from Atlanta. It was too cold during the week for me. I had no special motivation today; I only wanted to run fast. I know Wynne Davis, he is a friend of mine. We will celebrate together today in the evening. My next target is to run the new US High shool record. I would like to study bussiness at college in the future. I played futball before I started to do athletics. I have been doing athletics for 7 years now. I train three times a week and my trainer is famous runner Kim Batton. In the future I will focus on 400 m H. My class mates and friends are very proud of me.
200 m W, Final: Gold - Bárbara LEONCIO, BRA: I cannot believe in that. Maybe I will realize it later. It is great to be World Champion. I must say that my trainer is maybe happier than I am because he was so nervous. I was little bit tired after SF but I knew I had to do my best. My friends and compatriots helped me a lot. My friends and teammates are my biggest supporters. It is perfect - everybody will see me in the TV in Brazil - I will be very famous now (laugh). I like athletics very much - I train since I was 7. I spend my free time with my friends. I like going out.I live in Rio. My idol is Florence Grifith - Joyner. Once I want to be like her.
200 m M, Final: Gold - Ramone MCKENZIE, JAM: It is great feeling. I am used to this climate, I do not mind heats. The start of this race was not good, so i was very happy at the end. I wear these glasses only for fashion. I do not need glass in it. I train 8 years. Once I want to be as fast as Francis Obikwelu. My big motivation today was to walk in the footsteps of Asafa Powel. I want to become a chemical engineer when I grow up. My mother Lauren was calling me right now. She was very happy and excited. I live in Kingston. I would like to be something like possitive example for kids in Jamaica.
Pole Vault M, Final: Gold - Nico WEILER, GER: It was so amazing to win the gold medal with my first jump. I did not expect that all the other jumpers were out at 4.95. It was wonderful jump and it is a great feeling. I like when it is hot outside because I am used to it. I lived for 1 year in the USA; I went to school in Los Gatos near San Jose. I am trained by Brandon Vence. He is also here and coached me together with my father Roland. They both are working as a wonderful team. In the moment I cannot believe to be World Champion. I guess I need two or 3 days to realize what happened today. But this evening I will celebrate.
Javelin Throw W, Final: Gold - Tazmin BRITS, RSA: I was very very nervous before the last attempt but that made that I felt my body and that made that I had long long throw in the last attempt. This gold I want to celebrate even I am under 18 I would like to have a beer this night. But I must take care that my coach will not see me drinking. I am 16 and started with javelin only 4 years ago. I am an all rounder. I am doing cricket, golf and field hockey, still today.
Long jump W, Final: Gold - Darya KLISHINA, RUS: I could not do the proper jump for the long time during the competition. I do not jump well when I am not angry. When I got angry, I jumped far. I come not far away from Moscow. My parents are having holiday in Prague these days and they have come today to Ostrava only to support me. I will celebrate it but I must leave tonight with my team to Moscow. I had also big support from my friend from my training group during this competition. Our coach is Olga Shemigon. Actually, I do not have any sport idol because I am used to train in one sector with such stars as Carolina Kluft or Lebedeva. They are not rivals to me. They are very friendly.
Lung Jump W, Final: Bronze - Mariya SHUMILOVA, RUS: I was very nervous at the beginning. But afterward it was very good. I know Darya and she is my friend eventhough she is from other team.
100 m Hurdles W, Final: Gold - Julian PURVIS, USA: When I came to Czech republic I was a bit nervous and shaky and also got problems with my asthma, and after heats I was little bit tired but I spoke to myself: Come on, do your best, you are on the World Champs. Yesterday I felt good and also asthma did not bother me so much, and I tried to relax, had some rest. Today I felt good comming in. I am happy now. My mum is here in the crowd. I ran for my family, especially for my sister Ashton, who did not do very well in 100 m. We live in Oakland. My parents help me a lot but they want me to stay humble, not too bigheaded. I am competing my second year competitingly. In overal it is my 5th year. When I started I was kind of I do not want to do it. Now I love it. I want to study broadcasting communication.
800 m W, Final: Gold - Elena LAVRIC, ROM: I feel happy now. The 1st lap was very fast. Only in the last 50 m I realized I could win this race. But before the Championships I felt like a favourite. I knew that I can beat for medals. My idol from Romania is Gabi Szabo. I do athletics 3 years. I spent yesterday sleeping and relaxing. I will celebrate the victory at home with my family. But my brother lives in Spain. I am already famous in Romania. I sometimes go to TV and radio to talk.
1500 m M, Final: Gold - Fredrick Musyoki NDUNGE, KEN: I feel good now. The tactics of the run was about team. My teammate prepared a field for me to run fast in the last 100 m. We both come from the same area from Akamba tribe in Eastern province. The motivation for me was to capture domination of Kenya in this event. My idol is Bernard Lagat. This is my first year doing athletics. Before, I was running as a child every day to school. I live in the country side and in my family there are many runners. I train 3 x a week and I run 15-20 km during training days. But I have never won the National Championships.
Medley relay W, Final: USA: We are very happy. Before the competition we knew that we could be on the medal position. We had to work hard to win the gold. We are from Georgia, Pennsylvania, California and Texas. We know each other only 10 days and we became friends. We are all at the high schools. We will try for the sport scholarship to study at the university.
Yeah, that will be a great party.
Medley Relay M, Final: Gold - USA: It was very tight until finish. Of course, we are happy. There will be all night long party. Two of us are from Georgia, two of us from Texas but we met together only at this Championships.
